How do you make this bike so light?

A lot of customers ask this question about the S3 bikes. While we've built them to be very light in the smallest sizes (say, under 2.4 pounds as a frame or sub 16 for a complete bike), we don't make weight the major emphasis on this bike.

The S3 tube set is very light, but it's not the only secret ingredient in the light weight steel recipe. Dennis, our head frame builder, has developed several techniques to make the rest of the parts lighter as well. When bicycles are hand built one at a time, we can compare bottom bracket shells to find the lightest, we can use a lathe or a mill to remove unnecessary weight from many areas of the bike. This is why our lightweight steel bikes are even lighter than other lightweight steel bikes made from the same tubing. All it takes is time, a talented machinist, and the method of building every bike one at a time.

We've selected each component from various manufacturers to create the best possible bike that is capable of everyday riding. It would be possible to make these bikes even lighter, but that would entail some parts that were out very fast (titanium gears etc...). We chose to make an incredibly lightweight bike that is both comfortable, and durable enough for everyday riding. By picking the best for the money, we are able to bring the weight down and still provide a bike that we feel comfortable sending out to be ridden as much as you will want to, once you feel how nice they ride.
