Over the last few years, internally geared rear hub bikes (IGH for short) have really hit their stride in the United States. Commuting lends itself to the reliability and low maintenance of the design. Shimano has developed some great products that we are using, but Rohloff of Germany is really the heavy duty cyclists choice. I've written a piece for The Bicycle Paper that can be read here if you want to know more about IGH bikes in general.
At Rodriguez Bicycles, we know Rohloff and Alfine equipped bikes. We've built hundreds of them at this point. Over the last several years, our MakeShift line of custom Rodriguez bicycles has become a standard of sorts in the industry, and one of our better selling models. We've developed and manufactured specific braze-on fittings, dropouts, and other unique exclusive features (like our stem mounted shifter doohickey) that make our Rohloff equipped bicycles something special. Our customers find our bikes easier to use and travel with. A lot of Rodriguez MakeShift customers select the travel upgrade for ease of taking their bike on vacation with them. Just like all Rodriguez bicycles, the MakeShift series is guaranteed to fit comfortably.
Quick facts: Rodriguez Bicycle Company builds the highest quality Rohloff equipped custom bicycles for less money than any other manufaturer in the United States. We have years of Rohloff experience built into every MakeShift we hand-build right here in Seattle. Our bicycles are guaranteed to fit more comfortably and last a lifetime.
All Rodriguez Rohloff equipped bikes are available in 18 production sizes as well as custom sizing for just $200 extra. Plus we are offering every bike in our line-up with any choice of 4 different paint options at no extra charge. Custom paint jobs or colors are also available. If that's not enough, we have 9 different decal options to choose from as well.
The Rodriguez Low-Roller is a great bike for bouncin' around town, grocery store trips, or even short commutes to and from work. It has no derailleurs, but instead uses the Shimano Alfine 8-speed internally geared rear hub for reliable and low maintenance performance. If your commute is a little hillier than 8-speed will handle, upgrade to the 11-speed Alfine for an extra $500. For longer rides, or long-distance touring, look at the High-Roller series.
The Rodriguez High-Roller Sport - from $4,599
A lighter, sportier Rohloff equipped custom bike that's great for day rides or commuting. It's also great for long tours if you have a 'credit card' approach to touring, and prefer to stay on the roads. The High-Roller Sport model is actually a Rohloff version or our famous Rainier Randonneur bike.
The Rodriguez High-Roller Tour - from $4,699
No roads? No problem for the custom High-Roller Tour! As our most popular MakeShift model, this bike has the same frame/fork design as our Rodriguez UTB but utilizes the Rohloff rear hub. It's a heavy duty, rugged, 'go anywhere' bike that's great for conquering the world of bicycle touring....on or off the road.
The Rodriguez MakeShift Tandem
Got a hankerin' for a tandem with no derailleurs? Well pick up the phone and order your custom Rodriguez MakeShift Tandem today! Or check out the MakeShift Tandem line here.
WARNING! Not all Rohloff bikes are the same
Most builders who make Rohloff bikes use Rohloff's 'click box' design for shifting. While this makes the bicycle easier to manufacture, it has caused problems for some of our Rohloff customers. At Rodriguez, we go the extra mile and build some custom braze-ons to make your life easier. If you're interested in reading about those differences, click here
